Delaware License Plates

License Plates of Delaware

The State of Delaware first issued license plates in 1909.  All plates were porcelain and issued in pairs until 1915.  Steel plates were introduced in 1916.

Low digit numbered plates in Delaware are highly coveted and can be transferred from one motorist to another in the open market.  Low numbered registrations are traded just like a commodity focusing on the “right” to register a particular vehicle.

Most recently, public auctions have been held where low numbered Delaware registrations have commanded record prices.  Click for more info.
